Can I restore my Family Tree Builder tree from my family site?
If you have published your family tree online, then there will be a backup of your original family tree that you published to your family site on MyHeritage. In that case, please follow these steps to recover the file:
a. Open a browser and log into your Family Site on MyHeritage.com, then go to the Family Tree tab > Manage Trees page in your Family Site.
b. Choose the tree that you are interested in downloading, and click on the “Download to Family Tree Builder” link to the right of it.
c. Save the tree file to your computer.
d. Remember where you saved it!
Once you have the file downloaded, double click on the file to open it. This should restore your entire project, except for the photos. If you are using Family Tree Builder version 4.0 and up, upon opening your family tree in the program you will be prompted to restore the photos from your family site.
If you previously published your family tree to the family site using Family Tree Builder version 3 and below, you will need to reestablish the connection between your offline tree and your online tree:
a. In the main menu, click Publishing and select Publishing Settings.
b. In the window that opens, you will see the list of your sites. Select the site where this family tree came from.
c. Do not publish the tree yet!
d. Now, click the Photos button in the toolbar. You will see that all your photos have a “placeholder” photo since the files are still on the site.
e. Go to the Photos main menu and select “Restore photos from family site”.
f. Click OK to begin downloading the photos.
