Alfred Emanuel SmithResidence: 1890 - 18 Dover, New York, New York, United States
Alfred Emanuel Smith was born in 1873 in New York City and was a prominent American politician who served as the 42nd Governor of New York for four terms between 1919 and 1928. After serving as the Sheriff of New York County and Speaker of the State Assembly, he became a trailblazer for social reform, passing landmark factory safety laws and expanding public housing and education. In 1928, he made history as the first Roman Catholic presidential nominee for a major party, a candidacy that fundamentally shifted the loyalties of urban and immigrant voters. After leaving office, his influence remained visible as he led the construction of the iconic Empire State Building.
